SOC Sailing Academy presents Practical Navigation and Boat-Handling Course

The Practical Navigation and Boat-Handling Course is held in The Canaries with a starting and ending point in Muelle Deportivo, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.

This course takes you far away from the classroom environment, to a place where live decisions matter and mistakes have consequences. Training live is crucial for understanding the far leap between a simulated to an actual situation and all curved balls that it may bring about. Our aim is to teach you to prepare and implement measures for longer voyages at sea. Instead of ticking off all the regulation sheet boxes we want to highlight the actual process and practical aspects of creating your safety arrangements. Safety is understanding and implementing.

We will visit some of the different islands and our aim is to also have the time to explore when not out training. Our aim is to create a relaxed and inspirational atmosphere onboard with space for socializing and discussions.

The main content of the course:

• Night watch skills
• Use of radar, AIS, EPIRB and VHF
• Man Over Board (MOB) training
• Use of life raft – launch, storage and grab bag
• Establishing a functioning watch rota and routines
• Personal safety
• Attitudes, policies, tradition
• How to approach and enter a commercial harbour at night

We take 8 trainees for this event

Price PP 1480€ – the fee includes full board when at sea + all personal safety gear+ foul weather gear (also PLB:s). When we are parked up we eat out.

• No deposit

Price does not include transport to and from destination + expenses ashore and personal insurance.
