Åland & Finnish Archipelago Summer Cruise
Mariehamn – Turku | 26 July – 1 August 2027
Bavaria 50 “Branwyn” | €2,250 pp | €2,900 for your own cabin
Whole boat enquiries welcome.
Start your week in Mariehamn, step aboard, leave the harbour behind and enter one of the most beautiful cruising grounds in Northern Europe.
From here we head eastwards through the islands of Åland and the Finnish Archipelago, taking our time to explore the smaller islands, remote anchorages and traditional coastal communities before finishing in Turku.
This is perhaps the perfect itinerary for anyone who wants to experience the Archipelago without trying to see everything.
Because you simply cannot.
There are too many islands.
The Finnish Archipelago was formed by the immense forces of the Ice Age, leaving behind a landscape of granite islands, wooded skerries, shallow channels and thousands of protected bays. It is a place where navigation becomes part sailing and part exploration.
And the best way to experience it is slowly.
Branwyn gives us the freedom to get into the smaller and quieter places. She has five cabins, plenty of space for socialising and a comfortable cockpit that becomes our natural living room during the long Nordic evenings.
During the week we can combine sailing with swimming, hiking, exploring small villages, visiting local cafés or simply doing absolutely nothing.
Åland is particularly rewarding for food lovers. Local fish, smoked salmon, perch, new potatoes, vegetables, berries and apples feature heavily, alongside excellent local produce and a growing craft-food scene. The traditional Åland pancake is almost compulsory at some point during the week.
We could stop at Smakbyn near Kastelholm, perhaps visit Grannas Bistro among the apple orchards, or find one of the smaller waterfront restaurants in the outer islands. Grannas, for example, combines local fish and vegetables with produce from the surrounding apple-growing region.
Once we reach the Finnish side, there are equally tempting stops: Farmors Café on Högsåra, Scola in Barösund, Hanko’s Origo, or a relaxed evening in Nauvo.
And there is absolutely no requirement to eat ashore every night.
A smoked fish bought locally, some new potatoes, good bread and a glass of wine can make a spectacular dinner when the cockpit is overlooking an empty bay.
The sailing itself is deliberately relaxed. We will have a route in mind, but it is not a military operation. Weather, wind and the mood of the crew will have their say.
You come for the Archipelago. You stay for the feeling of having nowhere else you need to be.
Why This Is Different
This is not a sailing holiday built around getting as many people as possible onto a boat. With a maximum of around six guests, the experience remains personal, relaxed and genuinely intimate.
You are not joining a large group or a scheduled sailing tour. Branwyn is your private yacht for the week, with a comfortable environment where everyone quickly settles into the easy rhythm of life on the Archipelago.
Our experienced skipper brings extensive local knowledge of the Finnish coastline and, importantly, the freedom to use it. The itinerary is deliberately flexible. Weather, conditions and the preferences of the crew all play a part in deciding where we go and where we spend the night.
Breakfast and lunch are included, leaving the evenings completely open. We may find a table at a good local restaurant, visit a small harbour or simply drop the anchor in a quiet bay and prepare something aboard.
Branwyn’s relatively shallow draft is a particular advantage in the Finnish Archipelago. It allows us to explore narrow channels, secluded anchorages and small islands that are inaccessible to many larger or deeper-draft yachts. Rather than following a predetermined route from marina to marina, we can seek out the places that make the Archipelago special.
Some days may involve several hours of relaxed sailing. Others might consist of a short passage followed by swimming, exploring ashore, lunch in the cockpit and a lazy afternoon at anchor. There is no pressure to keep moving simply because the itinerary says so.
The result is much closer to a private yacht holiday than a conventional sailing tour.
A small group, a comfortable yacht, an experienced skipper and thousands of islands to choose from.
No crowds. No rigid schedule. No need to be anywhere at a particular time. Just the freedom to enjoy the Finnish Archipelago at its own pace.
